Goodbye 2018

Cheerio 2018… Hello 2019!

It’s our annual review and what to look forward to next year…

Blimey, what a year!

Brexit, 1.5 Royal Weddings (we’re not fully counting the Eugenie one) and the small matter of the GDPR coming into full force in May.

We’re pretty sure yours has been a busy one too but, phew, are we glad it’s nearly time to turn off our laptops, put our aching feet up and our wonderfully-awful Christmas jumpers on.

This is our last blog of 2018 and, because it’s nearly time for the big day, we thought we’d keep this one short and sweet so you can keep Googling/do more Xmas shopping/do anything but focus on work.

We just wanted to say how much we’ve enjoyed sharing updates with you and a huge thanks for all your follow-up and appreciative comments!

In case you missed them the first time around then, here’s a brief 2018 round-up of all things data protection-ish from the Databasix world…

In January, we kicked off the year with info that is just as relevant now as it was back then, with 3 easy resolutions around everyday good GDPR practice.

February saw us review consent and the other legal bases for processing (are you applying the right one?) and advice on what to do if you send e-marketing to your customers.

In March, we looked at processing special categories of personal data and why your privacy policy needs to be transparent and easy to follow (this one applies to practically everyone in business!).

In April, we talked about being more aware of your data protection rights as an individual and GDPR responsibilities as a processor and provided a checklist to get your GDPR house in order ahead of the big day. If you’ve just started a new business or still haven’t sorted out your GDPR, then these ones are for you.

May’s treat was on how you can build a sustainable GDPR culture and featured a blog covering lots of FAQs on GDPR (and yes, they still apply today).

June introduced you to the different types of support we can offer businesses and guidelines on retaining data and the right to have it erased.

Into July and data breaches gave us food for thought on how to better manage and try to prevent them. They’re still proving to be a feature of modern life so the advice on how to manage them remains hugely topical!

August allowed us to shamelessly announce our Small Business of the Year Award and bare our souls as part of a ‘getting to know you’ feature, along with the pitfalls of using ready-made templates for your privacy policies.

In September, we welcomed you to our new Artificial Agony Aunt, KelReg Triple-A, offering some mega bites of advice on how to safeguard your data and how not to scam someone (yes, really).

October covered Data Protection Impact Assessments and why they’re crucial in helping prevent major data mishaps, together with why knowing your supply chain well is an absolute no-brainer.

Then, in November, we heard all about what ‘data protection' means to the person on the street and what sort of practical data protection advice and guidance they had to offer!

And finally, December: we rounded off the year with our DBX Big Xmas Quiz! How did you get on?

And 2019’s going to be a cracker too…

And 2019’s going to be a cracker too…

Just because GDPR Day has come and gone doesn’t mean that we’re going anywhere!

Nope, we’ll still be here to help support you with any and all of your data protection queries, audits and processes.

Seeing you go from strength to strength is what keeps us doing what we’re doing which is why we’ve already worked out what we have lined up for you in our 2019 blogs… They’re going to be packed full of news, tips and advice and we know you’re going to love them – whatever your business!

Finally, a warm and festive thank you

Finally, a warm and festive thank you

Which leaves just one thing left to say for 2018 and it’s the most important one of all: a heartfelt thank you to all our customers.

We’ve loved working with you this last year and look forward to even more collaboration in 2019.

And for those of you yet to join the data protection party, you’ll be very welcome when you do.

Have a very merry festive break!

Now, does anyone know how to reattach a 4-inch knitted carrot and stuffing balls to a snowman jumpsuit? Please? Anyone?

Until next year...

What Is a Data Leak and How Do They Happen?

Data leaks are a serious problem for organisations and individuals. In this day and age, individuals freely provide personal information to organisations, therefore a data leak can have a significant impact on both the company and the person. They often involve the exposure of personal data (such as name, address and financial details), with additional damage to the company or organisation in terms of potential financial loss and reputational damage.
